Attack sign Guzda, trade Vella to Mississauga
The Owen Sound Attack is announcing that it has signed goaltender Mack Guzda, the 31st overall pick in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, to a OHL Standard Player Agreement.
A 6’4′ netminder born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Guzda is a dual citizen who recently skated at Hockey Canada’s Summer Showcase as part of the U17 Development Camp.
In 11 games last year with the Detroit Honeybaked U16 squad, Guzda posted a 1.49 goals against average along with a .918SV%. At Hockey Canada’s camp, the goaltender skated in two games, allowing 2.79 goals against to go with a .911 save percentage.
“We’re very excited to be able to bring Mack into the fold,” said Attack General Manager Dale DeGray.
“He’s a tremendous young goaltender that we feel has the ability to be a real game changer in this league. We’re looking forward to seeing what he can do at Camp next week and moving forward.”
In a corresponding move, DeGray has traded goaltender Emanuel Vella to the Mississauga Steelheads in exchange for the Steelheads’ 5th round pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, as well as Mississauga’s 6th round pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.
Vella, who was traded to the Attack from London early in the 2016-17 campaign, played eight games for Owen Sound in the regular season, going 5-2-0-0 with a 3.21 goals against average and a .863 save percentage. He also shared the OHL’s Dave Pinkney Trophy with Michael McNiven, awarded to the goaltending tandem that allows the least amount of goals in the league during the regular season.
DeGray said that the trade was necessary after acquiring Zach Bowman from the Sudbury Wolves, creating a log jam in the Attack net.
“Emanuel was a terrific goalie and a great teammate and we’ll miss him here in Owen Sound,” DeGray said. “I wish Emanuel and his family nothing but the best and want to thank him for his role in last year’s record setting season.”
Owen Sound now turns to Training Camp, which will open on Monday, Aug. 28. More information can be found HERE.
