A dominant showing against a Barrie Colts team on the second night of a back to back was enough for the Attack as they skated to a 5-1 victory over the Colts on Wednesday night at the Bayshore.
The Owen Sound Attack entered the final week of the regular season aiming for 30 wins, a mark the team has hit every year since 2010-11. With three games remaining and one win needed for the milestone, the Attack were ready to dig in against the visiting Barrie Colts, currently in a battle for their playoff lives.
The game started innocently enough. Back and forth play by both teams, with the Attack holding the lion’s share of the shots on net. It wasn’t until the halfway mark of the period that Cade Robinson buried a feed from Daylon Groulx that gave the Attack their first lead of the game, 1-0. With less than two minutes in the period, fireworks erupted. First, Ben Hawerchuk scored his 27th of the season to tie things at 1. Then, Groulx continued to make an impact on the game by delivering a monster hit in front of the Barrie net. After some retaliation from the Colts and a 4-minute minor assessed to Daylon, the Colts had a powerplay opportunity. Adam McMaster thought nothing of having one less skater on the ice, stealing the puck and breaking away down the ice before beating Jet Greaves five-hole for his 16th of the season and a 2-1 Attack lead with just 6 seconds remaining. The Bears would head to the 1st intermission ahead in shots as well, 12-7.
The Attack came out hungry for more in the 2nd. Manuel Alberg would strike first in the period, scoring his second of the season after batting in a puck that just trickled by the Barrie netminder and across the goal line to make it 3-1 Owen Sound. A few minutes later on their first power play opportunity of the game, Brady Lyle sent a shot in from the point, Cade Robinson pounced on the rebound and tucked it in for his 2nd of the night and the 3-goal advantage over Barrie. The Attack would head to the 3rd period with a healthy 4-1 lead on the scoreboard and in shots on goal, 26-12.
The third period was a quieter affair than the first two, with Attack striking early and skating out the remainder of the game. Kaleb Pearson scored his 14th of the season after being set up by Nolan Seed on the power play and it was a 5-1 game. The action after was limited, with Attack taking advantage of time on the power play and killing off the clock. Despite some late penalties, including a 5 on 3 advantage for Barrie, the Attack would hang on and maintain the 5-1 scoreline.
The Attack win is their 30th of the season. This marks the 9th straight year that Owen Sound has won 30+ games, a feat only matched by 5 other teams across the Canadian Hockey League.
The Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game was Carter Robertson. The Mac Taylor Corporation Three Stars of the game were Kaleb Pearson (1G), Adam McMaster (1G), and Cade Robinson (2G).
The Owen Sound Attack wrap up their season with a back to back against the Kitchener Rangers. They will meet in Kitchener on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and back at the Bayshore on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
